We are on the sassy train this morning! Patients sometimes give us a weird look when we ask them if they are eating ENOUGH calories. In the current diet culture, we are led to believe that most people need to lose weight by cutting calories, exercising more, and eating *good* food in order to be healthy. We are also taught that we need to make ourselves as small as possible to take up less space in the name of health especially if you are a person of color or have a disability.
There is a current problem of people not eating enough calories. How many times have you been told that you should eat 1200 calories per day in order to lose weight? 🙋🏾♀️ Sooooo…that’s the recommended amount of calories for a three year old and not an adult.
If you need help navigating the soul-sucking diet culture, try finding a well-versed nutritional therapist, a body positivity registered dietician, or an mental health therapist that specializes in disordered eating. You are more than what your body looks like. Your knee pain probably isn’t because you have extra pounds. You’d be amaze how much more you can get accomplished if you are fed appropriately.
*Good* food is different for everybody.
